Zakk Sabbath and The Native Howl All but Melt Faces off at Saint Andrew’s Hall
Zakk Sabbath and special guests (and hometown boys) The Native Howl shredded their way through their respective setlists at Saint Andrew’s Hall on Wednesday, January 10.
The room was jam-packed to witness the epic guitar playing from both bands, and there were so many fans clad in leather and chains that the line to get in took significantly longer than usual (not saying that’s an awful thing – it’s just part of the overall aesthetic).

It seems that The Native Howl can make sense absolutely anywhere, and that’s including on tour with Zakk Sabbath, or their upcoming tour with Clutch and Blacktop Mojo. They have coined the term “Thrash Grass” to describe themselves, and even go as far as to play a mashup of a Metallica “Harvester of Sorrow” fused with a track from the movie ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ called “I am a Man of Constant Sorrow.” If that doesn’t describe the vibe, I don’t know what will.
Zach Bolling donned a Red Wings Jersey for the hometown occasion while throwing down on the drums. Mark Chandler, Jake Sawicki, and Alex Holycross contribute to vocals and the strings across the stage. It was hard to see them during the first song being completely encompassed in red, but by the 2nd and 3rd song of the set, we got to groovin’.

*The setlist from the Detroit show was not uploaded anywhere, so this is a similar setlist shared from their set in PA. This playlist does not include songs “B.O.G.” and “Waco.”

If you’re familiar at all with the way Zakk Wylde plays, you know that you’re about to get some of the most insane guitar playing known to man. It’s even wilder right in your face, this writer can attest.
Prior to coming out on stage to play, Zakk ran out with an Ultimate Warrior mask and what looked to be vintage WWF figurines, filming the crowd and prepping them to get hype. A few minutes later, guitar strung around his neck, he began to hit those sick riffs we know and love.
Zakk Sabbath is essentially a Black Sabbath cover band that Zakk formed in 2014. Given that he had worked with Ozzy Osborne for many years, we’re sure he got his blessing. On this tour, John “JD” DeServio joins again on Bass, and Joey Castillo (of Danzig, Queens of the Stone Age) on Drums.
They came, threw down, and delivered as the crowd headbanged to their favorites with long guitar solos, a dream for the metalheads that came for the riffs. I mean, if you like Zakk Wylde, chances are you also like his band Black Label Society, which is all sorts of hardcore finger action.
We’re sure that fans walked away with fire in their soul after witnessing such a spectacle, and we can’t wait to see Wylde again in person.
Because Zakk Sabbath doesn’t have recordings of this, please refer to the setlist on Setlist.FM here.
