Hades Comes to Life: Melanie Martinez Stuns Detroit
Every time Melanie Martinez comes to Michigan, I know I’m in for something special. Having now photographed her last three Michigan stops, it’s been incredible to watch her live shows continue to evolve while maintaining the imaginative world she’s created around her music. Her latest performance at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, July 18, was no exception; it was another unforgettable night of music, storytelling, and breathtaking production.
Melanie first captured audiences’ attention with her appearance on ‘The Voice’ before carving out an incredibly unique identity in pop music. Rather than following trends, she’s built a world entirely her own, blending alternative pop, dark fairytale aesthetics, theatrical storytelling, and deeply personal songwriting. Over the years, she’s earned a devoted fan base thanks to her willingness to push creative boundaries, making every album and every tour feel like a new chapter in an ongoing story. That’s what’s made me truly connect with these shows as much as I have. As an artist myself, seeing someone in their own field have as much creative success as they do and CONTINUE to do so is so inspiring to me. Melanie and her phenomenal team never fail to show me that, year to year, it’s very much possible to get somewhere in the world with your creativity.
The evening kicked off with Haute & Freddy, whose unique blend of alternative pop and eccentric energy made for the perfect opening set. Their music is fun, unpredictable, and full of personality. I especially loved hearing “Anti-Superstar” and “I Like My People Weird” live, but the biggest moment for me was finally getting to hear “Freaks,” a song I originally discovered on TikTok. It was every bit as fun in person as I had hoped and instantly got the crowd singing along.
When the lights dimmed for Melanie’s set, the arena transformed into another world. One thing that has always stood out to me about Melanie is that her concerts aren’t just performances; they’re full-scale productions. The stage design, costumes, choreography, lighting, visuals, and storytelling all come together to create (In my opinion) one of the most immersive live experiences in music today. Every tour somehow raises the bar, and this show was no different.
Her latest era “Hades” continues that tradition while exploring an even darker and more cinematic direction. The album expands on Melanie’s signature storytelling with bold visuals, incredibly emotional songwriting, and larger-than-life production that translate PERFECTLY to the live stage. Seeing songs from this new chapter performed live made it clear to me that she’s continuing to evolve creatively while staying true to the artistic vision that has defined her career. You don’t see that too often! With an artist like herself showcasing that at such a large scale, it gives me hope that down the line more people will take inspiration, not being afraid to branch out, and having fun – while also being yourself.
The setlist featured several songs I had been looking forward to hearing, with “White Boy With A Gun,” “Disney Princess,” and “Grudges” easily standing out as some of my favorites of the night. Seeing those songs brought to life alongside Melanie’s signature visuals made for a prime experience for attendees.
This concert also carried a personal significance for me. I was fortunate enough to photograph Melanie’s ‘Portals’ Tour and ‘The Trilogy Tour’ during their Michigan stops, so returning once again to capture another chapter of her live performances felt incredibly rewarding. It’s something I’m truly grateful for, and it’s been amazing to document the evolution of what I feel is one of the most visually creative artists performing today.
From Haute & Freddy’s outstanding opening performance to another spectacular headline set from Melanie Martinez, this was a night that reminded me why I always look forward to her tours. As both a fan and a photographer, I’m incredibly thankful to have documented her last three Michigan shows, and I can’t wait to see what creative world she brings to the stage next.
