The Used, Story of the Year, Amira Elfeky Rage at GLC Live at 20 Monroe

Grand Rapids got thrashed on Monday, June 24 with a triple-bill of power in The Used, Story of the Year, and Amira Elfeky at GLC Live at 20 Monroe.

AMIRA ELFEKY

The venue was packed with fans ready to rock, and Amira Elfeky was the perfect primer for the evening. With vocals like Lacey from Flyleaf or Amy Lee from Evanescence, the melodic and haunting sound of Amira had people enthralled and soaking it in. With echoing backing vocals, Amira was layered with her killer band holding down the sound.

STORY OF THE YEAR

This was the second time that we’ve caught Story of the Year in 2024, and they were just as good if not better this time around. Their energy was at an all-time high, being excited to be on the road with The Used for the first time in 20 years, and they were absolutely ready to throw down. The crew also brought along Jason Milbank from Senses Fail to play bass, and the crew enjoyed goofing off with each other on stage.

The majority of their setlist was from ‘Page Avenue’ which they will be playing in full at this year’s When We Were Young Festival,  but a few songs from other albums snuck their way onto the setlist, including “The Antidote,” “War,” and “We Don’t Care Anymore.”

THE USED

The Used came out swinging. Kicking off their set with “Pretty Handsome Awkard,” the crowd was rabid from the word go. Much of the setlist at the front half was from their self-titled album, followed by chunks from ‘In Love and Death,’ which is the album they will be playing in its entirety at When We Were Young in Vegas.

Toward the middle of the set, the band played their new single, “MEDZ,” which is also the title of their newly released album of the same name. After closing out the set with “All That I’ve Got,” “The Taste of Ink,” they re-emerged with an encore that included a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
