Pixies & Modest Mouse Perform Their Best Jams at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre
Pixies and Modest Mouse joined forces at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on June 18 and entertained the masses.
Braving the heat, fans poured in to rock out to the sounds. Strangely enough, if you’re a fan of both of these bands, it makes sense that they would tour together. Though their sound isn’t identical, we love many things in the vocal delivery of Frank Black and Isaac Brock that make total sense to be comparable.
MODEST MOUSE
Modest Mouse interestingly layered their setlist. “Dashboard,” “Missed The Boat,” and “Spitting Venom” came from ‘We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank,’ topping that album out at 3 songs, as well as “Bury Me With It,” “Satin In A Coffin,” and “Float On” also clocked in at 3 tracks from ‘Good New For People Who Like Bad News.’
There was representation for other releases, including the EP ‘No One’s First, And You’re Next,’ ‘The Moon & Antarctica,’ but only one track from ‘The Lonesome Crowded West.’ The instrumentation was spot on, and given the many players on the stage for this performance, you get caught up in watching how everyone uses their instruments.
A fan in the audience who was obviously there for Modest Mouse jumped along to every track right at the barricade, while others yelled the lyrics back toward the stage. Speaking as someone who knows the band’s catalog, this was a solid setlist to hear that any fan would be delighted to experience, and it seems many did just that.

PIXIES
Pixies are technicians in their own right, so a lot of their performance is based on getting those songs out there accurately, and in stellar fashion. The Surftones’ cover song “Cecilia Ann” kicked off the set, followed by “U-Mass.” But the crowd truly picked up speed once we hit “Wave of Mutilation,” which comes from their acclaimed 1989 album ‘Doolittle.’
A live debut of their new single “You’re So Impatient” also graced the set, along with a tour debut of “No. 13 Baby.” As the temperature started to drop, it became a glorious night for the hill and pavilion fans, and cotton candy skies erupted as the sunset. You heard the voices on the breeze singing “Monkey Gone To Heaven,” and of course, they ended their set playing “Where Is My Mind?” but not before also covering Neil Young’s “Winterlong.”
