PHOTOS: Community Comes Together for Education Rally in Lansing

Saturday, April 26, members of the Education community, along with students and parents, gathered at noon on the steps of Michigan’s Capitol to educate, inform, and come together as a community with hopes of finding ways to hold onto our public education, which is currently under attack by this administration.

The event’s goals were outlined in the press release, which said:

“Michigan students, families, educators, and citizens are invited to gather joyfully, in celebration and solidarity, on the steps of the State Capitol in Lansing for People for Public Education, a free, statewide event dedicated to celebrating and strengthening public education across Michigan.

This powerful public rally will bring together a diverse lineup of speakers, including students, teachers, education advocates, and state lawmakers. Representatives and senators from across Michigan will be present to show their support and hear directly from those who live and breathe the reality of our public schools every day.

People for Public Education is about amplifying the voices of our communities and reminding policymakers that strong public schools are the backbone of a strong Michigan, and across the country.”

Organizer Emily Bawol kicked off the event at the top of the hour, which featured performances from Great Lakes Groove, the Lansing Children’s Choir, Jacqueline, and Faygo Flow, as well as speakers from all walks of life.

Some of the speakers included Michell Robinson and Pamela Pugh from the State Board of Education, Detroit organizer Imani Foster, Emme Zannoti from Equality Michigan, State Representative Jason Morgan, Disability Rights Michigan Mitch Sickon, State Representative Regina Weiss, and State Representative Carrie Rheingans.

Each speaker brought their version of how to fight back, but more importantly, how to lean on each other in this time of great polarization and advocate for their specific sectors.
