MOVEMENT Detroit 2023: Techno Christmas Delivers

Movement Detroit is THE event to go to if you want to experience the Birthplace of Techno. Over the years, there has been a pilgrimage of music lovers to Detroit, Michigan to pound the pavement at Hart Plaza in search of their favorite DJs and new music. In addition to all of the Techno and House on the well-rounded lineup (and a dash of Rap on Saturday night), Movement has something for everyone, you just have to know where to look.

The highlight of this year was the return of Skrillex, who was supposed to perform last year, but due to some personal reasons, he rescheduled his date to this year. It was well worth the wait, as we were able to hear the new music he’d recently released — two albums in fact, ‘Don’t Get Too Close’ and ‘Quest For Fire.’

Aside from Sonny Moore (that was for the From First To Last fans), there were killer sets from Charlotte De Witte, Green Velvet, Kevin Saunderson x Dantiez, John Summit x Dom Dolla, Basement Jaxx, Caribou, Bonobo, Kash Doll, and Three 6 Mafia.

Drawing in over 30,000 daily attendees, 115 different artists, and 6 stacked stages, we’ve come a long way from the underground events in 1998. On top of that, the festival has a music-focused draw, rather than the festival crowd in the EDC – influencer-obsessed type of way.

It also had a legendary win: Charlotte De Witte was the first female DJ to headline the festival, on top of there being more female and non-binary DJs on the bill than in previous years.

It’s hard to do justice to covering every artist that performed, especially when you would need to be able to time travel to be in 2 places at once. There were some hard decisions made, even for us. We had to choose whether we wanted to see Skrillex’s full set or catch Dom Dolla with John Summit, among other artists’ times overlapping. While the stages were near each other where you could easily make a break for it to hit 2 sets in an hour, that’s the price you pay when you’re offered so many awesome artists in one place.

And then, there are the activations. There was a whole JARS Cannabis area where you could play a claw game to win a Breeze Prize, as well as blow up alien ships and streamer tunnels, perfect for taking fun pictures if YOU ARE one of those influencer types (or just like fun). There was tons of food to be had in the center of Hart Plaza, as well as VIP DJ experiences and different vendors.

It’s also a great spot for people-watching (and we’re not talking about being judgemental). So many people come correct with their outfits for the festival, from mirror ball dresses to body paint, but rather than it be for a reason of getting a photo opp, it’s the one time a year when everyone can get away with dressing wild as hell and expressing themselves.

All in all, we’ll always recommend you visit Movement Detroit Festival at least once in your lifetime. It’s an experience unlike any other, and it’s only an experience you can get in Detroit.

In our opinion, over the weekend, if we had to rank the best sets we saw, here’s where we’d land:

  1. Skrillex
  2. Bonobo
  3. John Summit x Dom Dolla
  4. Green Velvet
  5. Dantiez x Kevin Saunderson
  6. Kash Doll
  7. Caribou
  8. Basement Jaxx
  9. Three 6 Mafia
  10. Uniiqu3
