Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band Play Intimate Show at The Magic Stick

Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band took the stage in Detroit at the Magic Stick on February 2nd to a crowd of eager fans. Best known for his sketch comedy work as one half of the duo Tim & Eric, Heidecker proved that he’s not just a jokester—he’s an incredibly talented musician, too.

The band was originally slated to play at the Majestic Theatre, but the move to the Magic Stick created a more intimate setting that perfectly suited his folksy tunes and vulnerable lyrics. The band powered through a 19-song setlist, showcasing Heidecker’s impressive range as a songwriter and performer.

The setlist included several tracks from his latest indie folk record, ‘Slipping Away,’ which was released in October 2024. Tracks like “Well’s Running Dry,” “Like I Do,” and “Hey, Would You Call My Mom for Me” had the crowd swaying along. Before playing “Trippin’ (Slippin’),” Heidecker shared a hilarious story about the first time he tried mushrooms, which served as inspiration for the song.

Instead of having an opening act, comedian Gregg Turkington took the stage midway through the set as his character Neil Hamburger, providing some comic relief to balance out the show. Since it was the day before Tim’s birthday, the band and crew surprised him with a cake and some balloons along with the crowd wishing him a happy birthday.

The night ended on a high note with the band performing the infamous anthem “Hot Piss” from Heidecker’s old project, The Yellow River Boys. It was the perfect way to close out the show on a more lighthearted note.

Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band put on a fantastic show full of catchy tunes and plenty of laughs. They’re making their way through the US right now. Be sure to catch them at a venue near you at timheidecker.com/live.
