Lawrence Lights Up Detroit: A Night of Family Business

On Tuesday, October 29th, 2024, the online sensations Lawrence brought their biggest headline tour, ‘The Family Business Tour,’ to the Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan. The tour is named after their fourth studio album ‘The Family Business,’ released in June of this year.

STEPHEN DAY

The evening kicked off with Stephen Day, a rising star whose energy and charisma filled the room from the moment he stepped on stage. Day set the tone for the night with his engaging and relatable demeanor, drawing us into his world with each song.

I was very pleased with Day’s performance, featuring songs such as “Goldmine,” a song that sparkled with infectious energy and was driven by a catchy melody that had everyone clapping and swaying, and the ever so different but just as amazing “Christmas All Over” which felt like a warm embrace, making us all feel the nostalgic joy of the holiday spirit, even if it was long before December. It was a very pleasing experience that was the perfect way to start the night and left us buzzing with anticipation for Lawrence.

LAWRENCE

Up next, Lawrence took to the stage like the stars they are. The eight-piece band is headlined by the sibling duo of Gracie and Clyde Lawrence, both of which have a rich musical background, tracing their roots back to their childhood in New York City. With their blend of pop, soul, and R&B, the duo captures hearts with catchy rhythms and meaningful lyrics.

I had the pleasure of photographing them in such an incredible setting. The stunning stage setup paired seamlessly with their lively stage presence, making it feel as if we were part of a musical or a nostalgic feel-good ’90s TV show. Despite a mixed reception to their newest song “Whatcha Want” on platforms like TikTok (the meme machine comes for us all eventually), it doesn’t define the band’s immense talent or their unique sound.

The crowd sang along passionately, amplifying Gracie’s jaw-dropping vocals, which were nothing short of mesmerizing. Each note she hit seemed to light up the venue, and Clyde was no less impressive, bringing his own flair and charisma to the stage with his excellent vocals and great keyboard playing.

Three songs during their set quickly became some of my favorites, those being “Family Business” which beautifully encapsulated the theme of connection and love, inviting everyone to share in its warmth. The lively song “Do” was an anthem of confidence and joy, compelling us all to dance freely with no inhibitions. Lastly, “Confident I’m Insecure” struck a chord with many, highlighting the delicate balance of vulnerability and strength that everyone can relate to.

The entire show felt like a pure whirlwind of emotions—a rollercoaster ride that made hearts flutter and feet tap. From the tender moments to the upbeat, danceable tracks, it was hard not to immerse oneself in the experience fully. The harmonious blend of Lawrence’s music, the welcoming atmosphere of The Fillmore, and the collective energy of the audience created a night that was simply magical.

If you ever have the chance to witness Lawrence live, do not hesitate! This band delivers an experience that is captivating, fun, and absolutely unforgettable.
