Last Looks at Lakeside Mall

You’d think with all the foot traffic Lakeside Mall was getting the last week would have been confirmation of its continued foot traffic, but it probably says more about our love of nostalgia and letting “the old” go.

Over the last week, many took to posting to social media about Sterling Heights’ Lakeside Mall closing as of July 1, and for many, this was the mall of their youth. We took one last saunter through its spread, taking in the empty storefronts. For some, this might tickle that funny bone of liminal spaces, while others, feeling more like urban exploring without the hazard of trespassing.

According to the Macomb Daily, the mall will close 6 PM on Sunday. They also note that “… developer Out of the Box Ventures, which owns the mall, is launching a $1 billion redevelopment plan that will fundamentally transform the property at the intersection of Hall and Schoenherr roads over the next 20 years,” and will be changing this plot of land into what is described as “…a Town Center, consisting of new offices, apartments, retail space, a 120-room hotel with attached parking deck, restaurants, recreational amenities, and more along M-59, which is known locally at the Golden Corridor.”
