K. Flay and Grandson Drop the Bass and up the Energy at St. Andrew’s Hall

Grandson, K. Flay, and Jack Kays entertained a sold-out audience, a feat to achieve when Taylor Swift was playing a hop, skip and jump from the famed St. Andrew’s Hall on Friday, June 9.

JACK KAYS

Jack Kays was a perfect primer for the crowd. With his band in tow, he played electric and acoustic tracks, along with an unreleased song called “Caffeine.” After his set, concert-goers were hitting him up for selfies and photos, including one fan who chose this night to be her first concert experience. We also had a quick moment with him to snap a portrait, along with well wishes for his budding career.

K. FLAY

K. Flay brought the energy – so much so, we at ACRONYM ZINE will do whatever we can to photograph her anytime she returns to Detroit because of this performance.

Kicking off her set, she played “The President Has A Sex Tape” which set the tone for what was in store, before going into “Four Letter Words.” She spent much of the set dancing and thrashing to the music, which was unexpected for us, as we’d never seen her perform live before. She also pulled out the electric guitar and covered “Bulls On Parade” from Rage Against The Machine as an interlude while performing her hit “Blood In The Cut,” which makes sense considering she collaborated with RATM’s Tom Morello on “TGIF.”

According to online sources, she also played a song that was unreleased titled “Punisher,” which has no other online paper trail beyond a live recording, leading us to believe she’s got new music on the way. We’ll definitely be in the crowd at the next show if we’re not in the photo pit because her set was the most entertaining of the night. We strongly urge you to do the same.

Check out the full setlist here (aside from “Punisher,” which is not on streaming services).

GRANDSON

Grandson took the stage sitting on a park bench with a sign behind him that says “I Love You, I’m Trying,” before heading into his catalog. The bass in Grandson’s songs are a highlight as they rattle your chest, and fans in the crowd were singing every word from go on “Two Along Their Way.”

While the full set list for Grandson at St. Andrew’s Hall was not posted, most of the setlists on recent dates look pretty much the same, including 2 songs he collaborated with K. Flay on, having similar production styles in a lot of their music.
