Erykah Badu Bewitches Fox Theatre Detroit

Erykah Badu, legend of the music world, brought her “The Return of Automatic Slim Tour: Erykah Badu Mama’s Gun ’25’ tour to Fox Theatre Detroit on Thursday, November 20.

A packed theatre took their seats as the tour dj warmed up the flow for the evening, before the lights dimmed to a dark red: the calm before clarity. After the band took the stage and set the vibes up, the queen herself appeared between her keyboards and her mic stand, the throne for this evening.

Donning one of her iconic hats and a golden yellow leather and sheened fabric, she performed her first 3 songs: “Certainly,” “No Love,” and “Other Side of the Game,” flawlessly and emotively with her giant backing band. The crowd was seated for the first few tracks, but once they went into “Time’s a Wastin,” people were on their feet, grooving.

For this 25th anniversary, ‘Mama’s Gun’ is celebrated as a staple for Badu, as the album’s blend of “neo-soul, hip-hop, and jazz elements” plus her killer vocals and lyrical prowess cemented her as one of the greats — as if there was no doubt already given her success with ‘Baduizm.’

She closed out her 18-song set with the iconic track “Bag Lady” as well as the classic “Tyrone.”
