Dave Matthews Band Makes Summer Feel Right at Pine Knob

Dave Matthews Band has fans who would brave a Tsunami for his show. On July 9, Pine Knob Music Theatre was on a rain delay before the doors opened for the show, but once that was lifted (and fairly quickly, we may add), die-hards piled into the venue to have a night of jam-band goodness from arguably one of Rock’s goofiest frontmen and his fabulous band.

Dave Matthews Band is always a surprise, because not only do surface fans have a good time, but the superfans also get their favorite jams in between some of the staples. The other thing? The setlists are never the same, so you’re always bound to get a surprise.

The first 2 songs played on the setlist were exemplary of this, with “Dancing Nancies,” which is around 6 minutes long, and “Funny The Way It Is,” which was an iconic jam from 2009. Both songs set the mood for what was to come for fans, but also gave a nice well-rounded kick off for different gateways of DMB fans.

Dave and Co. manage to clear a 20-song set, including tracks like “Satellite,” “Cry Freedom,” a Led Zeppelin Cover of “Fool in the Rain,” and “Grey Street.”

Dave Matthews Band, while keeping themselves well-rounded, also manages to not over-pollinate their set with radio or VH1 hits, which often means that the most surface fan will be questioning where certain tracks are (like “Crash Into Me” or “Ants Marching,” for example), but after consuming 2+ hours of Dave Matthews Band, you walk away feeling more encompassed with their deeper catalog, and arguably, with their most authentic works.

While we’re on authenticity, Dave also took a moment to speak up about current events… Because, duh, he’s DAVE MATTHEWS:

We will see DMB again. We know this, and we can count on it. And we’ll be there with bells on.
